    Our Stories

    Delores from Forest Hills, NY

I was only 12 years old when my young and healthy mother suddenly was very sick. She had a massive heart attack and her life and that of my family was never the same. She was one of the first to have bypass surgery and needed it again 12 years later. She ultimately died of heart failure at 60. This was more than 30 years ago, but I remember that my father, who was self-employed, did not have health insurance. My parents were only in their 30s! The medical bills wiped them out and it took them years to recover.

My message to anyone who reads this is to always be prepared, don't smoke, take care of yourself, and understand that heart disease can strike anyone at any age.

Thank you for a wonderful cause and for allowing me to share my story.

    Doug from Glen Ellyn, IL

I had been traveling for work and vacation for four straight weeks. While on vacation week three, I started experiencing jaw pain. It got to the point that it was keeping me awake at night. I got a mouth guard, just in case I was forcing my teeth together while I slept. It just did not go away. Fortunately, I called my doctor and a stress test revealed that I had blockage in my heart.

I was scheduled for an angioplasty and I remember the doctor telling me that almost always it results in a balloon procedure or at worst, a stent. I woke up to learn that I had severe blockage and I was scheduled for triple bypass surgery. All went well and only later did I learn that I was on the brink of having a major cardiac event. Three weeks after my procedure, Bill Clinton had his. I am very very lucky and have been for the past four years very healthy.

    Brenda from Clifton, NJ

On January 15th 2008, I had a heart attack and almost died from it. My doctor told me it was inherited. My father died at the age of 38 and I lost my brother at the age of 29. I'm 42. On January 18th they had to do a double bypass surgery. My surgery cost $84,000.00. I don't know how I will pay for my surgrey. I have not been able to work over a year now due to my health.

    Tamara from Dearborn, MI

My mother died of a heart attack almost 11 years ago. My father had a stroke only three years ago. He now lives with my sister and must always take his medicine. Doctors say that he probably won't recover from the stroke .I feel bad about it, but I watch my own health. I know it could happen to me if I don't take care of myself.
